One of our Neuroinflammation subtheme leads, Professor Marios Hadjivassiliou, recently joined Dave Woods on the Spotlight on Health podcast to discuss “Living with Gluten Ataxia.” As a recognised expert in gluten‑related neurological disorders, Professor Hadjivassiliou offers valuable insight into the complexities of diagnosis, management, and the broader implications for patient care.
The podcast series aims to increase awareness of Gluten Ataxia—a condition many people have never encountered despite its significant impact on quality of life. It is thought around one in one hundred people living in the UK are suffering with Coeliac Disease, the autoimmune condition which can have an adverse effect on the body when gluten is part of the diet, approximately a third of that number remaining undiagnosed. In some cases, this can lead to the neurological disorder Gluten Ataxia. Research has shown, that at least 25% of people diagnosed with celiac disease will go on to develop the rarer condition.
Each episode explores a different aspect of Gluten Ataxia; speaking to those that it affects, the challenges healthcare professionals face, medical research being undertaken and what help and support is available.
