Funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, we conduct research across four primary themes:

Cardiovascular Disease
Infection & Immunity
Imaging & Engineering
We are dedicated to improving patient treatment and care in areas where there are currently unmet clinical needs to enhance the quality of life of people within Sheffield and afar. Our strategy is based on the over-arching principles of Impact, Excellence, Inclusion, Collaboration and Effectiveness.
In order to find new treatments, we first need to answer the following questions:
Why do certain diseases develop in some people but not in others?
Why do people with the same disease often progress (experience worsening symptoms) at different rates from each other?
Why do some treatments work in some people but not in others?
NIHR Translational Research Collaborations
NIHR Translational Research Collaborations (TRCs) are collaborative groups of world-leading investigators established via NIHR Biomedical Research Centres with significant expertise in specific disease areas. The TRCs enable NIHR to work together with industry, charities and other stakeholders to develop and deliver early-phase translational research at scale.
The NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) is part of the NIHR Dementia TRC, NIHR Respiratory TRC and the BHF/NIHR Cardiovascular Partnership.
NIHR BioResource
The NIHR BioResource recruits and maintains a resource of data and samples donated by over 200,000 people. Researchers can use this resource to call up potential participants for studies to understand the links between genes, the environment, health and disease.

NIHR Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs) are collaborations between NHS organisations and universities. They bring together academics and clinicians to translate scientific discoveries into potential new treatments, diagnostics and technologies.
