International Nurses Day 2026 Celebration
SHEFFIELD, UK – On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the University of Sheffield’s School of Allied Health Professions, Pharmacy, Nursing and Midwifery hosted a landmark International Nurses Day celebration, highlighting the critical intersections of clinical excellence, nursing leadership, and research inclusion. Funded by the NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), the hybrid event was centred on the global theme: "Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives."
The programme was organised and led by Professor Parveen Ali (NIHR Sheffield BRC Research Inclusion Lead) and Dr. Ashfaque Talpur (Research Inclusion Fellow), bringing together a diverse audience from across academia, regional hospitals, and the public to Lecture Theatre 01 and a global online stream.
Advancing Research Inclusion and Diversity
A core priority of this BRC-funded programme was empowering and encouraging nursing colleagues from diverse ethnic backgrounds to present their work and drive the research agenda. The "Cohort Oral Presentation" sessions highlighted vital research addressing healthcare inequalities and workforce integration, including:
Aasia Rajput: An Appreciative Inquiry into the Integration of Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) in England.
Olivia Adolphus: NIHR BioResource: Research Tissue Bank Improving Black Health Outcomes (RTB-BHO).
Omnia Elnawawy: Ethnicity, Antibiotic Behaviours, and the Patient Prescriber Relationship.
Adeela Rehman: Medicalization of Motherhood: A Phenomenological Study of Nurses’ Lived Experiences in Maternal Healthcare Settings.
Keynotes and Leadership Insights
In addition to celebrating diverse cohort researchers, the event featured high-level insights from prominent healthcare leaders:
Workforce Safety: Chris Morley, Chief Nurse at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, delivered the morning keynote on the Safer Nursing Care Tool and Safer Staffing, bridging workforce empowerment with patient safety.
System Leadership: The afternoon session featured Patricia Hughes from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and Professor Diana Greenfield, focusing on leadership structures required for safer, future-proof healthcare systems.
Academic Pathways: Professor Sam Debbage (Director of Education and Research, DBTH) outlined pathways for developing successful clinical academic careers within the NHS.
A Shared Vision for the Future
The event proved to be a collaborative triumph, showcasing the impact of the partnership between the University of Sheffield, NIHR Sheffield BRC, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH), and Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH).
